Finally, some good news for poor, lovelorn Callie: Grey’s Anatomy has officially promoted her on-screen leading lady, Jessica Capshaw, to a full-fledged series regular, sources confirm to me exclusively.
The ex-Practice star joined Grey’s last February as a recurring love interest for Sara Ramirez’s Callie. Her arrival came on the heels of the controversial dismissal of Brooke Smith as Callie’s girlfriend Dr. Hahn.
What do you think? Happy Capshaw is sticking around? Are you as high on Callizona as Rhimes is? Or are you still holding out hope that Dr. Hahn will one day escape from Seattle Grace’s parking lot? Sound off below!
Story 2
Fall’s still months away, but one of last season’s bigger Grey’s Anatomy cliffhangers has already been resolved: Sources confirm to me exclusively that ABC has granted T.R. Knight’s wish to be released from his contract. The official decision, I’m told, came down in the past few days, just as many of his castmates began receiving their formal pickup letters from the network.
What does this news mean for George? What will Knight do next? And what about Izzie? Find out after the jump…
The actor’s exit closes yet another rocky chapter for the embattled primetime soap, one that opened with Isaiahgate and worsened when, amid rumors that Knight was clashing with series creator Shonda Rhimes, George O’Malley was backburnered. Finally, Knight grew so fed up with his character’s lack of storyline that he asked if he could check out three years before his deal expired. After that, all indications were that he would be let go, although Rhimes didn’t make a final decision until recently. (Contractually speaking, she had until June 30 to make up her mind.)
Last month, Rhimes told me that George’s relatively light storyline this year was the result of the normal “ebbs and flows” of ensemble television. But she did acknowledge that he was intentionally written lighter during the last half of the season so that viewers wouldn’t think it odd that he was absent from the season finale - something that was necessary to preserve the episode’s biggest twist: that George was actually a disfigured John Doe who had been hit by a bus. “I really wanted you to not notice that he wasn’t there for most of this episode,” she said. “I don’t think anybody noticed because of the way we laid it out this season.”
Knight’s departure would seem to confirm that George doesn’t survive, although fans have wondered whether Rhimes is planning to pull an Elizabeth Reaser (Jane Doe/Rebecca) and have him live, only to be replaced by another actor, thanks to plastic surgeon Sloane’s handiwork. That’s “hilarious, ridiculous,” the boss has said. However, I’ve heard that she was interested in having Knight appear in next season’s first three episodes, but a short-term deal could not be brokered.
What will Knight do now? Per an insider, the theatrically-trained thesp is in talks to start 2010 by headlining a Broadway revival of Lend Me a Tenor, the classic farce he recently did a reading of with Alfred Molina, Tony Shalhoub and Marian Seldes.
Reps for Knight and ABC declined to comment.
Now that the question of George’s future seems to have been answered, another puzzler moves to the forefront: What’s going to happen to Katherine Heigl’s Izzie, whose life also hung in the balance in last May’s capper? Stay tuned… In the meantime, proceed to the comments and weigh in on Knight’s departure.

ABC will finally put an end to last season’s cliffhangers as the network premieres an all-new season of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, September 24 at 9pm, following the series premiere of the new drama series Flash Forward.
This leaves us nearly four months before we learn the fate of T.R. Knight and Katherine Heigl, whose characters, George and Izzie, both seemingly departed the fifth season finale of the medical drama, leaving viewers with no definite indication of whether either or both are dead or alive. But learning if George survives and if Alex will kick off the season as a widower aren’t the only cliffhangers that plague Grey’s Anatomy fans as they wait for the new season to begin.
Many viewers are also curious to find out whether Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) can make it work and if a real wedding will ever be in the cards for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey). Let’s also not forget Bailey (Chandra Wilson), who is struggling to find some balance with her career and single motherhood, and Callie (Sara Ramirez), who has taken her relationship with Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) to the next level.
In other news, cast member Chandra Wilson is briefly diverting her attention to the Broadway stage. As reported previously, the Grey’s Anatomy actress has been cast as Matron Mama Morton in the play Chicago, which her co-stars from the medical drama came to watch last Monday.
“She was absolutely amazing,” James Pickens, Jr., who plays Richard Webber on Grey’s Anatomy, told People. “She was perfect and should be very proud of her performance. I had a great time watching her.”
“I paid them lots of money for them to do [the cheering],” Wilson said with a smile. “I’m absolutely thankful they came out. We all try to support each other as much as humanly possible so to have them out there and have friends out there felt really good.”
HBO’s Entourage will be a little bit crowded when the new season kicks off in July. Rapper 50 Cent will reportedly join the cast of the series that revolves around Vincent Chase, a young A-list movie star, and his childhood friends from Bayside, Queens, New York City, as they navigate the unfamiliar terrain of Hollywood, California. According to The Insider, the infamous singer has been spotted filming scenes for the show on Friday, joining cast members Jerry Ferrara, Adrian Grenier and series creator Doug Ellin on the set.
This is not the first time a rapper has graced the show. Entourage has easily carved a niche in the rap community by booking rappers like Kanye West, T.I. and Snoop Dogg. Moreover, both Saigon and Bow Wow have also recurrently appeared on the show.
“50 looked like he was enjoying his time as he drove on the streets of Los Angeles in a white convertible Rolls Royce,” The Insider reported, adding that the rapper’s episode is set to air in August.
As of this moment, however, 50 Cent’s participation on Entourage is not yet known.
This is the latest casting news for Entourage’s sixth season. Gary Cole has been confirmed to be joining the cast as a regular for the new season while Lil’ Wayne is expected to appear in an episode as himself. Also guest starring are Tom Brady, Autumn Reeser, and Swarnendra Verma.
More recently, it has also been announced that Matt Letscher, who last starred in Eli Stone, Prison Break star William Fichtner, and Scott Caan, who is credited for Oceans Eleven, will also be getting multi-episode arcs on Entourage. High School Musical star Zac Efron is also set to appear.
Aside from Entourage, 50 Cent has also been cast in several upcoming movies such as Streets of Blood, Dead Man Running, Spectacular Regret, The Dance, The Ski Mask Way, and Twelve.
